Does my business need to be on social media?

“We are on social media but we don’t get much from it. So, does my business need to be on social media?”

Every social media manager has heard this at some point. Here. We. Go. Again.

Remember….

Your social media is just ONE part of your marketing strategy and may be having a more of an effect than you realise.  So yes, your business needs to be on social media.

Has anyone ever called you and said “Hi, I saw that Facebook post you did two days ago and I am interested in your XYZ product”? – The answer is probably NO! The call is more like “Hi, I am interested in your XYZ product – do you have any in stock and how much are they?”.

But that person may have seen your social media post about it, may have walked past your business or may have seen another advert you did on a flyer you dropped in their letterbox three months ago. Social media may have been one part of this process before they called.

So what do we know about social media?

We know that 31% of Australians that are on social media, check in on their platforms more than 10 times a day, and 79% check in at least once a day.

We know that 30% of potential customers will check your social media feeds BEFORE they even make contact with you.

We know that 53% of potential customers trust a company MORE when they regularly update their social media content.

* Stats from Yellow Social Media Report 2020.

Does this mean my business needs to be on every social media platform?

No!  Just the ones that are suitable for your business.  For example, if you are an engineering company, Tik Tok is not the place for you.  But LinkedIn is perfect.  This decision should link back to your overall marketing strategy and your ideal client.  It is better to invest your time and energy into building an engaged audience on one platform rather than sporadic posting across four platforms that has little to no engagement or following.  Remember, social media for business is completely different to you posting cat videos, avocado toast and funny memes to your friends on your Facebook or Instagram pages.  Business social media needs to be social, but professional and in-line with your brand values, product or service and customer base.

So how do we know if your business social media is really working?

We look at the stats! Which posts get the most interaction or engagement? Every business is different – for some it is images all the way, others it is video, some it is the copy – and this changes across platforms too. So when it comes to social media, it’s not post and forget – it is constant monitoring and testing different options to ensure the message is reaching your audience.

Here at Lemon and Lime Digital, we have invested in the technology to allow us to benchmark your Facebook and Instagram against your competitors. We can see how you are performing, but more importantly we can see how the competition stacks up. We know what their best performing posts are, what their reach is compared to yours, how engaged their audience is compared to yours…. you name it. This means we have an upper-hand as we can deliver the best content for you.

Bottom line: Your business needs to be on social media. Social media must go hand in hand with your other marketing activities to ensure your services and products reach your audience.
